The main character Creel was charming and real and the dragons were more humane and like-able than most of their human counterparts. I loved the fact that each dragon had a separate and interesting personality, and they weren't all grouped together like they are in most books. They fight a war in the book, so there is some fighting - nothing graphic.
The story starts off when Creel's aunt decides to sacrifice her to the neighborhood dragon in hopes that a rich prince will come rescue Creel and make the family extremely wealthy. Creel sees the event as an opportunity to follow her dream of working in the city. So instead of waiting to be rescued by a prince, Creel convinces the dragon to let her go. Creel leaves the dragon's lair unscathed with seemingly ordinary slippers that make her feet itch (a gift from
the dragon), and a desire to make her mark on the world. On her quest to get a job in the city, Creel encounters numerous troubles, adventure, some friendly dragons, and a spoiled princess. The princess takes a liking to Creel's slippers and makes Creel's life miserable when Creel refuses to hand them over. Because of the slippers, Creel also finds herself caught up in a political plot to destroy the nation. Creel must call on her new friends to help put an end to the war, and the princess.
