One Busy Day by Lola M. Schaefer.

I've been reading (and writing) a lot of picture books lately, so the next few posts are going to be picture book heavy.

A great picture book that discusses the relationship between brothers and sisters is One Busy Day by Lola M. Schaefer.

Synopsis -  All Mia wants is for her big brother, Spencer, to play with her. But he's always too busy! So Mia paints, and dances, and explores, and keep busy all by herself. But with a little imagination and a lot of love, Mia might just be able to show Spencer that it's a lot more fun to be busy together.

The story is cute and really hits home for my girls.  My 5 year old Bid loves playing with her older sister, but sometimes her older sister just wants a break.  She likes to read this book when she is a little sad.   We read the book, then she thinks of something fun to do.  After a little quiet time. her older sister always wants to get in on the action.

As much as she loves  the story, Bid's favorite part of the book is the pictures on the back end pages.  She loves to see all of the fun things the siblings ended up doing together.

To Buy - If your kids need a little help remembering how to play nice together, One Busy Day can definitely help drive the message home.   It retails for $16.99, but you can get it right now on Amazon for $12.75.

Stranded and Trial by Fire Books by Jeff Probst and Chris Tebbets - Review

Picture books are a little too easy for Kik now, so If your kids need a little bit older books, check out  the Stranded series from Jeff Probst and Chris Tebbets.

I had heard about the Survivor TV show of course, but I had never actually watched it. So when I first heard about the kids book series, I wasn't sure if they would be my type of book.   But then I read Stranded - the first book in the series - and I was pleasantly surprised.

In Stranded, Vanessa, Buzz, Carter, and Jane find themselves as siblings in a newly blended family.  While the kids parents are honeymooning, the four kids join their uncle on a 5 day boat expedition.  Although, they don't always get along, things are going relatively smoothly, until they get trapped in a big storm.  They end up stranded on a deserted island and have to find a way to work together to survive.

Stranded was full of action, yet still clean and appropriate for kids.  I also liked how it approached the subject of blended families learning to work together despite their differences.

The 2nd book in the Series is called Trial by Fire.  In Trial by Fire there is another big storm, and the kids lose most of their supplies.  The kids have to find a way to survive on the island while also learning to deal with each other.

I like that in this book, the kids actually make a lot of mistakes, and deal with their differences in a realistic way.

To Buy - Both books are great adventure books  geared toward the 8 year old and up market.  I haven't actually had a chance to pick up the 3rd book in the series yet, but that's only because it doesn't come out until November.   The books retail for $6.99, and are available online and in stores wherever books are sold.

BOOK REVIEW: Smarty Pig by Molly Nero

Smarty Pig is a Children's Picture Book.

The little red-haired pig knew if she wanted to succeed in school, she had better study.  She organizes her notes and makes the best use of her time, all the while her friends make fun of her and call her a "Smarty Pig."

When the grades come in, everyone is disappointed except the little red-haired pig.  The other pigs don't understand how to make words and math work for them.

Smarty Pig comes up with a solution and all she asks for in return, is that they try their best to understand. Will the pigs listen to the little red-haired pig or will they continue to frolic and play?

I thought this was a delightful book with a great moral message to young readers.  I loved how the author expresses the desire to learn and how important it is for each to do the best they are able.  I like to say that perfect takes practice and without even trying, one is only setting themselves up for a downfall.

I loved the illustrations by Monique Turchan.  They are colourful, full of fun and life and there is loads of background "candy" for wee eyes to ponder over.  I thought the pictures were expressive and encouraging.

Smarty Pig is done in a rhyming prose and for the most part it sing-songs along, as expected, but I did find some of the flow to be interrupted by the rhymes, a few of them felt forced.  I would give it a four out of five stars, and look forward to learning more lessons from Smarty Pig.

BOOK REVIEW: Traegonia: The Ember Rune by K. S. Krueger

Traegonia:  The Ember Rune is Book Two of the Traegoina series and is a Young Reader Fantasy Adventure Fiction.

The story continues with Dino, Juna and Karia almost a year after their first encounter in Traegonia:  The Sunbow Prophecy.  (you can read my review here.)  The three have adjusted nicely from the previous years mishaps; each coming into their own as they explore their forest and continue to bond.

When Dino's parents announce a family vacation to California for a week, the two Traegon's feel the need to travel with Dino.  Karia has been having strange dreams about fire that has her worried and Juna has always wanted to see the mountains.  Between the three of them, they come up with a plan that will enable them to travel to California.

After a few narrow mishaps on the journey, they arrive safely and begin to explore their new surroundings.  When the three of them meet Jade, Autumn and Fletch, their vacation is about to take on more than they can handle.  Karia is still acting unlike herself as she spends more time alone trying to decipher her dreams and Dino is excited to be able to share his stories with others of like mind.

During their quest, the three begin to realize what is at stake when Karia's dreams begin to unfold.  Will the children have the courage to do what is needed or will they fail the Ember Rune?

I cannot say enough good things about this series, it is fantastic!!  I love how the author writes the tale of the Traegons, the world and character building is phenomenal and you cannot help but feel captivated by the events unfolding.  The passages will make you laugh and cry as you peruse the situations that the three find themselves in.  The airplane trip was nerve-wracking as well as hilarious to read and I couldn't put the book down until I knew the outcome.  There are many instances throughout the book in which you will find yourself quickly turning the pages in order to keep up with the events.

I love Dino and think he is an amazing child, his depth and breadth of himself and his surroundings is remarkable and many children could take lessons from his moral tenets.  The underlying message concerning the environment and how we are the caretakers is written in such a subtle way, you don't realize your being reprimanded for not doing your part.  There are many life lessons to be learned from Dino and his friends.

I would give Traegonia:  The Ember Rune a five out of five stars.  This book delivers fun, excitement, chaos and dilemmas, all designed to keep the reader moving forward and you will want to.  From beginning to end this book is full of entertainment and is a must have series to have in any library.  I cannot wait to see the next adventure...very excited to read more and K.S. Krueger has the ability to make you fall in love with her words, her characters and their lives.

Official Courageous Resources

This was a wonderful book to read and I would express men grab themselves a copy and not only read the pages but apply them to their life situations.  There are many lessons to be learned from within and each are backed with well versed topics in order to keep the reader on the correct enlightenment.

The book warns at the beginning that it is not for the weak, that many of the topics will make your hackles rise as you try to deny the truths you already realize and that is, your life is in serious need of adjustments.

Many men will find it hard to read the truth about themselves and their gender and how the onus has been placed on them for not being good enough role models in life.

The author speaks of how men have changed over the years, cowering away behind their business desks and not standing up for their loved ones.  Without any real encouraging men to stand behind, other males tend to fall off their path in life by directing themselves away from responsibility and commitments.

I thought it was a well delivered book fill with many insights and thought provoking phrases and scriptures that are sure to get your life back in order and on the right path.  I would give The Resolution of Men a four out of five stars, it was wonderfully written with many exercises to apply to your life and your surroundings.  I think this would make an excellent addition to bible groups and/or couples retreats.

While I liked how the book was written, I couldn't help but feel this book was more geared towards men, then women, though the author concludes that it can apply to anyone who reads the book.  I was able to overcome the attitude for the most part but it was still troublesome nonetheless.

I liked how the prose sounded as you read the pages.  It was clear, concise and easy to understand and allowed a natural flow to the overall readability of the book.  I liked all the historical aspects that were included and thought they were well placed throughout the pages.

There are plenty of biblical references to back up the author's thoughts, many of them fitting for the discussion being shared.  I loved the encouragement to stand up and be accounted for in the eyes of God and think this should be read by many who have questions or concerns.

I would give Courageous Living a four out of five stars.  While I enjoyed how the book read, I was put off by the "geared for male" orientation that was shared throughout.  However, it is a decent read with much to share and would be a great addition to bible study groups.

Rachel Greer was born in Milwaukeee, Wisconsin on October 25th, 1992.  In her teen years, she loved to recite Maya Angelou poems in the after school activity of Forensics. I loved how the author shared the poems with the reader.  They aren't written in flowery conjectures filled with meaningless adjectives in order to confuse and frustrate the reader.  Each poem is expressed in layman's terms, easy to understand and digest.

I thought the author, Rachel Greer, did a lovely job of conveying the messages of each of the poems.  You can feel the backstreet slang emanating from the pages as you engross yourself in the word dialogue being shared.

The great thing about poetry that its truly up to the interpretation of the reader and these poems express a hard-edged truth about them that makes them truthful and gritty.  There are mild to moderate expletives in some of the exchanges, but they only add to the ambiance the author is trying to convey.

I would give Words Of Inspiration From Your Own Kind a four out of four stars.  I thought the message was well worth reading and think this would make an excellent addition to school curriculum's.

BOOK REVIEW: Invisible by Jeanne Bannon

Invisible is a YA Paranormal Romance Fiction.

Lola Savullo is in her senior year and she's dreading it.  She believes she is too tall, overweight and downright freakish.  She works as a Lifeguard at the local pool and the day she has to put on a bathing suit and attend to the children, instead of remaining on the sidelines, Lola learns of her wonderous power.

At first it is a rare incident and Lola quickly brushes it aside and when it happens again almost a year later, Lola is hard pressed to ignore what is happening to her.  After she confides in her best friend, Charlie, the two take to helping Lola practice her newfound ability.

The two girls have been bullied their whole lives, Lola for being a overly large freak and Charlie for her sexual orientation.  Charlie wants Lola to use her powers to get revenge on the group of teens that is forever making their lives miserable.

Lola has had a crush on Jon most of her life and when she finds him hanging with the bullies, she is devastated, she never felt Jon was that kind of a person.  Along the way Jon learns of her secret and encourages her vengeful plot again the group that harasses her.

Over the course of events, Lola looses some very close to her heart and she must come to realize if revenge would make her feel whole or would believing in herself be the right option and after what the group almost did to Charlie, Lola is angry, very, very angry.

I thought this was a wonderful read.  Lola was easily likeable and you could feel for her life situations.  Lola has a gorgeous older sister who wrings havoc in her life, her 44 year old mother believes she is 18 and her dad looks like a tattooed hippie freak.  Lola just wants to blend in and not make any waves, however, Lola's mother believes she should act and dress more like a lady.

I wished I could have got more back story on the why's of the invisibility occurring, I was never really clear and the reason given, something to do with A neg. blood just didn't sit well with me. I thought it was a rather asinine way to describe the reasons why Lola was developing the trait that seems to be passed along through maternal genetic means, though this is never really brought to light and leaves the reader hanging for more explanation.

I didn't get a romantic feel for Jon and Lola, it continued to read like they were really good friends and I just didn't feel the spark coming off the pages.  I thought their friendship should have remained platonic and the story wouldn't feel so trite in areas.

I would give Invisible a three and a half stars of out five.  The basis for a good story is there and the characters are enjoyable to read, I just felt there was a serious something lacking that would've made this an exceptional read.  I would read more by author Jeanne Bannon, she does have a way with words that brings out an emotional aspect from the reader.

SYNOPSIS:

Yet power can be abused, too… Then, when tragedy strikes, Lola must summon her inner strength, both at home and at school. She has to stand up for herself, despite the temptations and possibilities of her newfound super power. A coming-of-age story that will warm the heart.

BOOK REVIEW: Traegonia by K.S. Krueger

Traegoina:  The Sunbow Prophecy is a Young Reader Fantasy Adventure Fiction.

Traegonia is a world within a world, where elves, fairies and gnomes exist, you will not find it on any map, but it does exist.  They are the protectors and keepers of the Earth and they have done their job well until lately when havoc and chaos appears to be on the uprise.  A developer is looking to tear up the land and the Traegon's will be displaced and a great rift will form in Nature.

The day that Dino's mother shares the secrets of the forests, Dino becomes captivated with finding the Traegons and befriending them.  Dino is not frightened by their appearance and soon becomes friends with Karia and Juna, the three find themselves in the midst of a prophecy.

The three work together to stop the developers and to bring the prophecy to fullfilment, time is running out and so are their options.

This was a fantastic read and the journey you are imagined upon is worth the ride.  The world of Traegonia is great and world-building is not an easy task for a writer to accomplish and the world in which this book mainly resides in is wonderfully depicted and described.

I couldn't help but feel like the Traegon's looked like some of the Muppet characters found in "The Dark Crystal", and often found myself picturing them as such.  They are a great race of people to read about and many lessons can be learned from within these pages.

This would make an EXCELLENT series to read to your youngsters.  There are many moral and engaging lessons to be gleaned from the pages.  Beliefs in yourself and your dreams/passions is shared throughout many of the pages and you cannot help but want to spread them to other minds to interpret.

I thought all the characters played well together and the story they shared was superbly expressed and left the reader as if watching the whole book displayed as a movie, which I would love to see Traegonia made into, it would make excellent eye candy.

I would give Traegonia:  The Sunbow Prophecy a five out of five stars.  I can only praise this series and believe it would make an wonderful addition to anyone's library.  I cannot wait to read the next book, "Traegonia:  The Ember Rune".

An introduction to school? Certainly, no one beyond the age of six really needs such a thing, but the verses within may well stand as a re-introduction to a world of experiences and their associated feelings which may not be tucked quite as far away as we might think. Several of the photographs included in this book were taken in schools nearly a hundred years ago, yet they clearly point out to us that, in many ways, school hasn’t dramatically changed since the pencil. Perhaps the styles of the clothes were a little different, or the desks had inkwells - but look to the eyes!

The excitement, wonder, anger, anticipation, worry, humor, love and frustration associated with school is seen on the faces of schoolkids (and teachers) from any era. Thus, this collection of verses rings true for virtually anyone who ever had a lunch money envelope pinned to his or her chest.

Part One: Of Teachers and Teaching, came into existence through my own teaching for the past quarter century, and any- one who has ever taught kids of any grade level will have lived out many a line in these sometimes humorous, sometimes rather reflective verses.

But, no matter what your occupation, you will no doubt find yourself (or someone you knew) within Part Two: Of Classmates and Class. From the class clowns, to those who took the idea of a schoolhouse education a bit more seriously, they’re all here. Of course, their names may be different, but that doesn’t matter.

My Thoughts~!!

I thought the book was a great read, I loved reading about memories of schools and how things once were.  It was a wonderful trip down memory lane and many, I am sure, will find the trip thought-provoking as each of you remembers things.  Some of these memories may not always be good ones, but the situations of our yesteryear helped to shape the people we are today.

I enjoyed the poetic writing style of each of the verses and the accompanying pictures added a wonderful nostalgic flavour to the whole experience.  Many of the pictures shared are reminiscent of yester-year and you find yourself using them as eye-candy after you read each of the verses.

The CD is rich with songs of school and memories as you are taken to the dreaded Dodge Ball games that were infamous of schools past.  Watching that red ball being launched while your gym teacher smiled sadistically from the sidelines is one memory you will be drawn to.

The music is in a folk, country retro mix that is sure to keep everyone amused as they tap their toes to the tunes.  My youngest daughter has taken a real shine to the CD and I often hear it playing from her bedroom.  She likes the references to school being made and finds it entertaining.  She has shared the CD with her friends and not a one of them was disinterested in the writing style and equally agreed that it pleasurable to their ears.

This was an educational read.  It was filled with many life-affirming quotes that are meant to inspire and remind the reader to reach for their dreams.  I liked how it was written in an easy to understand approach, almost like you were reading the excerpts from a friend.

I was impressed with the drive and determination found on the pages and loved the side stories the author shared with the reader.  As well as the anecdotes and thoughts shared by many worthy notable figures in history.

I found it to be an easy read and the lessons are simple to interpret.  The passages are well read and the imagery is easily viewed in your mind's eye.

I would give Journeys on the Edge a three and a half out of five stars.  I thought it was a good read but I didn't get from it the information I thought I would.  Much of the information shared can be found most anywhere, however, it is the writing style in which author, Walt Hampton, writes with that makes this an agreeable book to peruse.  Who knows, you may find something inside that sparks your desire to succeed.

BOOK REVIEW: Nate Rocks The World by Karen Pokras Toz

Nate Rocks The World is a Children's Action/Adventure for ages 9 -12.

Nathan Rockledge is your typical ten year old boy.  He feels his hair is too red, his freckles too many and his size too scrawny, however, put a pad of paper and a pencil in his hands and Nate could rule the world.

Nathan's older sister, Abby, is bossy and drives Nate crazy, his dad is always going on about when he was a boy and Nate's mom cannot cook anything that doesn't taste like cardboard and the thing is, his mom has no clue to her lack of culinary experience.

Things in Nate's real life don't always go as planned, like how he has to do his science fair project with a girl but not just ANY girl, but Lisa Crane, the only girl he did not wish to be matched up with!!  Nor does he get along very well with Abby and when they each get a package for Christmas that tells them they are about to embark on a trip, his sister whines and moans about not having anything to wear while Nate is thinking about all the exciting and endless possibilities this trip could incur.

Whenever Nate needs a break from his reality, he picks up his trusty pencil and creates the situation in a positive way in which it usually works in Nate's favour, unlike his real life situations.

I found this to be a highly imaginative and creative story and enjoyed reading it.  I thought the imagination of Nate and how he related to the world around him was hilarious and entertaining.  I think this would make an excellent movie for children to view as I would love to see his imaginations come to life.

I enjoyed reading about each of the characters and how they interacted with Nate.  I loved the outcomes of most of his situations and how he accepted each curve ball thrown at him.  You will read how he hits a home run in the greatest baseball game in history to his travels in space, there is nothing found within the pages that will not impress your children to continue reading.

I would give Nate Rocks The World a five out of five stars for its imaginative creativity and how one could almost imagine it on the big screen, right down to which children could play the roles involved.  Author Karen Pokras Toz has written a great book that is guaranteed to keep your young reader enthralled right to the very end.

BOOK REVIEW: Chicken Joe Forgets Something Important by Trout Fishing In America

Chicken Joe Forgets Something Important

There is nothing I can say that is wrong with this book/CD combo, it is an excellent addition to any library.  The music is wonderful, the story is delightful and the illustrations by Stephanie Jorisch are just a perfect blend of colour and magic.

I loved how all of Chicken Joe's worked to make a memorable day for Chicken Joe.  The thought of a cat named Chicken Joe who lives in a hen house is hilarious and then there's the dog named, "Miss Kitty".  The whole premise of the characters are charming, the story has purpose with wondrous results and a happy ending is to be found by all.

I loved the music on the CD, it's kind of a rock'n'roll folk sound that keeps your toes a'tappin' and your fingers a'snappin'.  My kids and I boogied around the room on a few of the more happening tunes, like "Rock'n'Roll Roosters" and "You've Got A Funny Name", which has a country twang to the tune.  My kids said to tell everyone to go and get this for their collection, it is a great book with awesome music.

I would give Chicken Joe Forgets Something Important a five out of five stars.  It is original in content and has many hilarious antics and songs.  My children love it and it has been played numerous times over!  With six thumbs up, how can you go wrong??

BOOK REVIEW: Songs From The Baobab by Chantal Grosléziat

Songs from the Baobab: African Lullabies & Nursery Rhymes is a storybook-music CD compiled by Chantal Grosléziat, arranged by Paul Mindy and Illustrated by Elodie Nouhen.

This delightful book shares eleven languages of Central and West Africa via a collection of rhyme's and lullabies.

These soothing tales soothe babies to sleep as the songs travel from one country to another sharing their customs and languages.

The accompanying CD features 29 songs from 10 countries.  The lyrics are reproduced in their original language and translated into English.  The instruments heard in each of the songs are indigenous to the country and played with passion.

This enchanting production captures the staccato rhythm of the children's rhymes and the poetry of the language, as well as, a sense of the heritage and tradition from each culture.

Songs From The Baobab

I absolutely love the music that is found on the CD, the songs are a wonderful blend of life and tradition.  The percussion is remarkable as you find yourself tapping your toes to some of the more catchier tunes.

I was more impressed with the CD than the storybook, I found some of the illustrations to be dark and there were a few times where I couldn't see the words upon the pages.  To read the book as a story doesn't make much sense but when its shared with the CD, it allows a whole new plethora of emotions to ensue.

I would give Songs From The Baobab a four out of five stars.  The songs are enriching and shared wonderfully with the listener and the break down of all the songs at the back of the book make for a wonderful addition, especially if you are unaware of the Lullabies and Rhymes of Africa.

BOOK REVIEW: Geek Girl by Cindy C. Bennett

Geek Girl is a YA Fiction Romance.

Jen is a ward of the state and she loves to express herself by dressing Goth.  Her new foster parents seem decent enough, but come summer, Jen will make a display that will get her shipped off to another family, she doesn't like to stay in one place for too long.  Jen's mother is in prison for killing her father and she has been drifting from family to family for many years.

When she accepts a dare from her friends, her life is about to change forever.  She is to befriend the geek Trevor Hoffman and make him fall for her and her friends will pay for her next piercing.  Jen accepts the challenge and works to ingrain herself into Trevor's life.

During the time, Jen comes to realize that Trevor is the best thing to ever happen to her, she begins to have misgivings about the bet.  The more time she spends with Trevor, the less she feels worthy of his attention.  When the truth finally comes forth, Jen is devastated and must learn to walk with her head held high; scorned at school by her friends, Jen isn't sure she can go on, until an Angel appears and between the two of them, they put Jen's life back on track but without Trevor, is it even worth the effort??

I thought this was an excellent YA Romance novel.  I read author Cindy C. Bennett's first book, My Heart On A Chain (read my review here.) and was equally impressed with this work of hers also.

The characters are all worthy of reading, believable in their actions and nature and the story grips you as you read on.  I thought that Jen's plight in life was worked well with the plot and I was pleased by the outcome of the story, the antagonism was drawn out with the right breath and tidied up just when you expected.

I love the writing style this is written in, you can almost feel yourself returning to high school and the trips down memory lane are great.  Many of you who have graduated will certainly appreciate the reminiscent feeling that you gather from the pages.

At times the book was emotionally charged, I found many of my emotions were drawn out, happiness, sadness, anger etc. and thought this was a very rewarding experience to have.  I couldn't help but feel for Jen as she came to many cross roads in her life and wondering which path she would choose.  It made for an entertaining read.

I would give Geek Girl a five out of five stars.  I found almost no editorial issues, the story and the outcome are believable and the author has the ability to draw out your emotions.  Very commendable indeed~!!

SYNOPSIS:
"Think I could turn that boy bad?"

My two best friends--my only two friends, really--follow my gaze and laugh.

"Trevor Hoffman?" Beth scoffs. "No way, Jen."

"I bet I could," I say, shrugging.

"Why him?" Beth asks. "Why not any of the other nerds sitting there with him?"

"Because," I say slowly, "he isn't your typical run-of-the-mill geek. Trevor Hoffman is different. He would be a little more difficult to take down--more of a challenge, you know?"

Jen's teenage life of rebelling and sneaking out is growing stale. In an effort to combat her boredom, Jen makes a bet to turn Trevor, a nice geek, into a "bad boy." Unexpectedly, she is pulled into Trevor's world of sci-fi movies, charity work, and even--ugh!--bowling. Jen discovers that hanging out with Trevor isn't so bad after all.

But when Trevor finds out about the wager, all bets are off.

BOOK REVIEW: The Bronze And The Brimstone by Lory S. Kaufman

The Bronze and the Brimstone is Book Two in the Verona Trilogy and is a YA Science Fiction Fantasy.

The tale continues where Shamira, Hansum and Lincoln left off in the first book, The Lens and the Looker (read my review here.) still stuck in 14th century Verona without a clue as to how to return home.

Along the way they, with the help of their genie Pan, meet many interesting characters who help guide them to their destiny.  During their journey they bring many technological aspects to light, including the telescope and the three have to deal with the political outcome that ensues.

The people of Verona have come to view Hansum in a different light and they focus their attentions on him and Hansum must learn who his true friends are.  He does deeds that are underhanded and sneaky and his actions almost cost him and his friends their lives.  Shamira falls in love with diastrous results and Lincoln begins to become a part of the life of Verona and finds he there are some things he is adept at doing.

During their quest, each of them must struggle with themselves and those around them, will they survive the trials set before them or will their desires provide their doom?

I thought this was a fitting sequel, again, author Lory S. Kaufman is able to adeptly blend history with fiction fantasy.  I loved reading the historical aspects dispersed throughout the pages and thought everything blended well.

I thought the turmoils and tragedies the children found themselves in to be gripping and entertaining.  I wish the story didn't seem to center so much around Hansum and would've liked to have seen more of Shamira and Lincoln.  I thought Hansum's actions when the townsfolk took interest to be fitting for his character.

I enjoyed the town intrigue and how each of them interacted with the children and was surprised by a few of the outcomes.  The plot twists and turns are enough to keep the average reader guessing and the story ending had a great finish.

I would give The Bronze and the Brimstone a three and a half out of five stars.  I had some issues with the "adult" content found within, it often flowed along juvenile lines and the romantic aspect of the story was disappointing.  I also had some problems with dream sequence, it wasn't expressed in a proper manner and I was left wondering what I had just read.  However, the history blending with technology is a great read and the series would be suitable for anyone who enjoys the mix.

BOOK REVIEW: Sock'n Boots Adventures by D. K. Smith

Sock'n Boots:  Adventures is a Children's Picture Book.

Sock'n Boots wish to teach children different life lessons through their own experiences.

Each of their stories begins with a question, the story will present itself, then the question is repeated again.  This is designed to help stimulate positive thinking and expression of thoughts.

The Adventure's book combines all three of the Sock'n Boots series into one book.  Share, Afraid of the Dark and Play It Safe have been compiled together to help bring these important lessons to your child.

Sock'n Boots:  Share - the reader is asked if they know how to share and then Sock and Boots will show you through the outcome of their actions.  When the two head to the park for a picnic, the birds have eaten Socks lunch.  Not to worry though, Boots comes through and shares his lunch with Socks.

Sock'n Boots:  Afraid of the Dark - After Socks goes to bed he hears bumps in the night and this frightens him.  After he checks over his room, he feels safe and shares his message with the reader.

Sock'n Boots:  Play It Safe - Socks is looking for a new place to play and after he finds one, he tries to convince Boots to play there too.  However, Boots doesn't think its safe and after mishap happens to Socks, Boots is there to save the day.

Each of these stories are shared in a rhyming prose that children will find easy to follow and understand.  The illustrations depicted by Lorena Isabel are highly detailed, wonderfully coloured and provide children with thought-provoking questions to the depictions shared.

I would give Sock'n Boots:  Adventures a five out of five stars.  I found the stories to have a message that all children should have knowledge of and the lessons were told in an entertaining manner.  The prose is easy to read and those who are just beginning to read will find great pleasure in sharing these stories.

Also found at the back of the book are several colouring pages for children to further enhance their creativity, so it provides hours of amusement.  I think this would make an excellent addition to your home library and I am sure it will become a favourite your wee ones will love.

BOOK REVIEW: Tumbleweed Christmas by Beverly Stowe McClure

Tumbleweed Christmas is a Children's Picture Reader.

Jackie has believed in Christmas miracles since his mother told him the story of Jesus and his birth.

One Christmas season Jackie, his little sisters, April and May, and his mom were having a very tough time.  Jackie's dad was really sick and in the hospital and the family had no money to do anything special on Christmas.

Jackie had a dollar in his pocket and swearing his sisters to secrecy, he sets out to buy them a tree.  Along the way he meets his best friend, Daniel, who has lost his baseball glove and is upset as his father won't allow him to play in the Little League.

As the two traipse about trying to find a tree, Jackie comes upon a tumbleweed and his excitement and imagination build.  Helping Daniel with his dilemma, everyone finds the miracle of Christmas through love and generosity.

I really loved the illustrations by Bridget McKenna.  They were expressive, charming and colourful and my children enjoyed looking at them.  They added a beautiful blend to the story by allowing children to visualize the words being expressed.

I loved the tenacity and spunk of Jackie and loved how he didn't let the "bad" things in life to bring him down.  I enjoyed the "glass is half full" message that was being shared and how to look for positive solutions even when it seems against the odds.

I found the sacrifice that Jackie made to ensure his family, heartwarming.  It had a miracle to boost their morale in all the hardships the family was currently facing, reminding the reader to always find the miracles in life. 

I would give Tumbleweed Christmas a four out of five stars, while I found the story wonderful, I couldn't help but thinking that the mother wasn't well-represented.  The burden of Christmas should never have been felt by her children even with her own problems, her children should never be overlooked.  However, children will not see this message, unless they are perceptive, like my two, it is because of their mentioning it, that I bring it to light here.

This would make a great stocking stuffer for your wee one!

Holiday Gift Guide Day 24 - Babysitting Sugarpaw & I Love You, Be Careful Book Review & Giveaway

I Love You, Be Careful by Judy Snider and Joan Dickow is a Children's Picture Book on Parenting and Relationships.

From the moment we are born, someone is there telling us to be careful.  There isn't no one that hasn't been told by someone, to be careful, whether they are playing, or traveling or just doing everyday things, a mom, dad, friend etc. has told you to watch what you are doing because you are loved.

A baby is born and we read how the parents watch over her, protecting her and reminding her to be careful.  From climbing trees, playing in the park or beach, ballet recitals, first dates, marriages and the birth of the child's own baby, her parents are there to remind her that they love her and to be careful until the moment she says the same things to her own child, bringing the book full circle.

I thought the pictures were delightful and lead to much discussion about the events on the pages.  Each page is simply written giving you a chance to let your imagination soar as you feel the message the book is trying to convey.  The illustrations by Candy B. Driver were colourful, friendly and beautifully depicted and children will delight in pouring over their stories as you read to them.

Babysitting Sugarpaw by VS Grenier is an Action Adventure Children's Reader book.

Sugarpaws parents are going away and a babysitter is coming to look after him.  He is not impressed and begins a plan to make things work for him.

After Bonnie Whiskers arrives to watch Sugarpaw, Mama Bear takes her to the kitchen to show her the rules that Sugarpaw has to follow.  Sugarpaw has other plans and changes the rules so that he is able to do more things.

Bonnie tries her best to look after the unruly Sugarpaw; she tries to get him to play games, read a story and take a bath and Sugarpaw makes trouble for her whenever he is able.  After Sugarpaw comes to realize his actions, he must tell everyone the truth about the reasons for his misbehaviour.  

Again, another delightful story with a great message and wonderful depictions of the characters.  The illustrations by Kevin Collier are charming and colourful and will delight your young person as they explore the pages.

I thought Sugarpaw to be a very mischievious little bear and was happy to see that he realizes his actions may hinder those around him.  I loved the outcome of the story and how Sugarpaw confesses to the wrongs that happened while his parents were away.  I also liked how the issues were resolved.

I think both of these books would make excellent Christmas gifts for your loved ones.  They are wonderfully illustrated, with great messages of love and learning and both books would be a welcome to any child's library to be read over and over again.

BOOK REVIEW: The Amazing Adventures Of Thomas And Erin With Grandad by John Vasey

The Amazing Adventures of Thomas and Erin with Grandad:  Market Day is a Children's Easy Reader.

Erin and Thomas are going to the market with their grandfather.  They ride the bus, visit the bookstore, take a walk through the park, shop at the flower store and they stop for a cup of tea.

Along the way, Erin, two, and Thomas, three and a half, learn from their grandfather how to bond as a family.  Grandad shares stories with his grandchildren before they head home from their days events.

I thought that the message of the story was an encouraging one.  Spending a day with your grandfather is always a wonderful thing and it was enjoyable reading about their adventures.  

I wasn't too fond of the graphics, the grandad was kind of creepy to me, maybe if he shaved or looked more like a grandfather I would have to change my opinion.  While I felt that Erin looked two, Thomas, upon first seeing him, I thought he was around seven or eight and not the three and a half that is stated.

As well, this book is geared for children under five and I feel that maybe a slightly older group of children would like it better.  I feel its a little dark for young minds and maybe adding some more colour to the pages would make it more appealing.

I would give The Amazing Adventures of Thomas and Erin with Grandad:  Market Day a two and a half stars out of five.  I thought the story was a good read but the graphics weren't very impressive.
